Minna Vigren

There is a need to creatively (re)imagine the kind of technology we want to live with. How could we create a better society for all? Let’s dream together!

I’m a digital sustainability scholar interested in questions on human agency, infrastructuration, imagination, power, resistance, and disconnection in networked everyday life. My current project is Imagining Sustainable Digital Futures: Outlines for Eco-Digital Agency (Research Council of Finland, 2022-2025). The project aims to develop methods to foster creative and radical imagination that challenges and resists the taken-for-grantedness of digital everyday life and its injustices and unsustainabilities. I’m a co-founder of Ethical x Digital Futures Research Lab (E-FRE). In E-FRE, we combine knowledge from different fields to contribute to a more ethical, equal, and sustainable society. Our mission is to bridge an in-depth understanding of human cultures and institutions with the design and creation of digital technology ideas, concepts, and software, to frame socio-technical phenomena in transformative ways. Since February 2024, I’m a member of the Puistokatu 4 collective for sustainability researchers.

Here you can find a list of my academic publications, conference presentations, workshops, and invited talks.

Research

I’m Academy Postdoctoral Researcher at Information Networks, Aalto University, and the co-founder of the Ethical x Digital Futures Research Lab. My ongoing project Imagining Sustainable Digital Futures: Outlines for Eco-Digital Citizenship focuses on developing methods for imagining a more socially and ecologically sustainable digital future. Key themes in my research are agency, power, imagination and imaginaries, alternative futures, and critical technology education in the context of a pervasively networked society and everyday life. In my interdisciplinary research, I combine critical internet studies, software and algorithm studies, science and technology studies, human-computer interaction, radical pedagogics, and futures studies. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested in collaboration or supervision.
